Mayor's Message

Welcome to City of Hargeisa official website. This site is designed to provide accurate and easy to use the information on Hargeisa`s services and programs. We hope that you find this website useful and helpful. It is a great privilege and honour to serve the city of Hargeisa as your mayor. Hargeisa combines a friendly, atmosphere with cultural and economic opportunities. The city is home to people from every corner of Somaliland, neighbouring countries and even the globe. As the city continues to grow, we are striving to make sure the nation’s capital services meet the needs of all residents. We are making for a city that is not only home to more people, but a great place to live and do business. That is why we invested millions of dollars for road infrastructure equipment’s, established Hargeisa fire department and introduced E-Government and land management system in our city council`s history. However, significant challenges remain. To deal with these challenges, Hargeisa must become a city where walking, cycling and green public parks become the most appealing and practical choices for all and in particular children and young people as we are aiming to become a child-friendly city. These active, efficient and sustainable choices not only support the health and wellbeing of Hargeisa residents but also the city as a whole by reducing congestion and enabling the most efficient use of valuable street space. You can be assured that together we will continue to work to make our community a special place. We are happy to have you as a part of Hargeisa. It’s good to be home.

The New Upcoming Hargeisa Local Government Head Quarter

Rapid population growth of Hargeisa in recent years and increased demand for services has necessitated the construction of a new multipurpose Headquarters for the city’s local government.

We have been working with Rashid Ali Architects; an award winning practice formed based in London since the end of 2019 to explore the opportunities for developing its Head Quarters. We have developed a master plan that makes a dense use of the site and enables it to be implemented in phases. The concept is to turn the site into urban, landscaped courtyard that invites the public in, without necessarily visiting for a particular purpose. The first phase will be two new buildings that will give the Municipality a civic presence in the city along the two main entrances to the north and south.

With its newly redeveloped Head Quarters, Hargeisa City Government aims to set a new standard for the built environment and civic architecture in Somaliland. The new buildings will be unique in their design and set unprecedented standards in sustainable urban development through the following means;

  • Unique design in building form, interiors and landscape
  • Innovative building construction systems and materials
  • Use of renewable energy
  • Grey water recycling
  • Rainwater collection system
